Some Useful Terms and Definitions
Aggression is a forceful behaviour, an attack
Bullying is a form of repeated, persistent and
aggressive behaviour that is directed at an individual or
individuals that is intended to cause (or should be known to cause)
fear, distress and/or harm to another person’s body, feelings,
self-esteem, or reputation. Bullying occurs in a context where there
is a real or perceived power imbalance.
Hate Crimes use race, religion, nationality,
ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, or disability to discomfort,
frighten, or harm individuals and to instill fear into groups of
these individuals.
Harassment is the repeated annoyance or bullying of
an individual or individuals.
Police Involvement is used to define the
circumstances when police “follow-up” with and investigation ‘after’
an incident has occurred.
Robbery is the taking of another’s property using
violence or intimidation
Staff includes administrators, teachers,
educational assistants, support staff, secretaries, custodians, bus
drivers and any other individuals expressly authorized by the Board.
Threat is a declaration of an intention to inflict
punishment, injury or death on someone.
Youth Gang is comprised of three or more people
who, while acting or together display a pattern of delinquent
behaviour, which may result in violent activities and/or criminal
activities.
Vandalism is defined as willful damage to property.
Violent Incident may include verbal or written
threats; physical, emotional, sexual abuse/harassment/assault;
racial or ethnocultural harassment; robbery; extortion; or bullying
by an individual or group of individuals which has the effect of
impairing or might have the effect of impairing the health and
welfare of any student or staff member.
Weapons are defined under the Criminal Code:
“Weapon” means anything used, designed to be used or intended for
use; (a) in causing death or injury to any person, or (b) for the
purpose of threatening or intimidating any person and, without
restricting the generality of the foregoing, includes a firearm.
